yes. I would think it would be the name of the entire water park, or the new wave pool, or the water play structure. Carolina Harbor doesn't really fit a name for a slide imo.

Jonathan wrote:Well, there were plenty of paint markings earlier in the summer around County Fair, including in the Dodgem area, so it wouldn't surprise me at all if there is a County Fair makeover as well, especially given the amount of hype the park has churned out. I can't imagine that the waterpark expansion alone is what they think will satisfy people when it comes to removing Thunder Road. The empty space where the station was is conspicuous; could be a good spot for a flat ride. Hopefully it's for next year and the plans just haven't been filed with York County yet or they are not being published online. If someone really wants to play detective you could probably file a FOIL request with the county and they would have to turn over any applications.

The TR station spot being empty does make ya go "hmmmm". There was some speculation that much of County Fair was going to become part of the new waterpark entrance and that this would utilize Action Theater and TR's station area. From the plans, it seems that this area is not involved in the waterpark expansion at all, unless that "mystery path" is a new connection to the dry park.. Even so, I have a feeling that something "dry" is going in that area next year. I think this is what the "there's more than one way to make a splash" teaser was alluding to. That may just be wishful thinking, of course, but I tend to agree that the waterpark as shown doesn't equal the hype, nor does it make a good case for removing Thunder Road.

I've seen / heard hints in various places that in 5 years, the park is going to be a major player with extensive renovations and investments, so I don't doubt that by then we'll see most of the wisdom in the decision to remove Thunder Road. I do hope we see a bit more of that than this waterpark expansion next season, though, because I am impatient. :D

In regards to those unknown paths to nowhere. Here is what I believe they are for: Maintenance. If you look at the plan it shows the existing maintenance building on the far left end of the "path". On the right end is the existing maintenance road that ran along/under Thunder Road.

a cobblestone maintenance path? I'm not buying it

They will probably be eventual pathways to new attractions in the open spaces. For now, at least according to this map, they have gates on each end so no GP will have access to it.

I don't think people have realized how much more space the park got from Thunder Road's removal. Aside from the mini golf area and the new volleyball courts, I'm counting 4/5 areas (3 of them very large) that future expansion can go directly where Thunder Road sat.

The 2016 addition plus filling in these open spots eventually will bring a helluva lot more people than Thunder Road could on it's own.

P.S. - I'm still thinking the station area will be for future waterpark expansion. They might use a small area for a flat or two, but that area is too hidden from County Fair and it's too close to the existing pool area to not be included in the waterpark.

Don't forget what Matt O keeps mentioning - ROI - return on investment. As we saw with Gr8 Sk8, Thunder Road, and possibly Intimidator branding, if the costs of maintaining and operating a ride exceed the return in ticket sales, in-park guest spending, etc., we can expect to see it eventually go away. Cedar Fair still has a large amount of debt so being smarter with their money makes a lot of sense for them to continue to expand, grow, and update their parks.

I also don't think we should set judgement on the plans. I still think there is more to the announcement than just a water park. Not a new coaster, but I think there is more in the works for 2016. Despite all that it appears that they will be doing for 2016, it generally doesn't take this long to build a water park expansion.

While I also wanted TR to stay, I do feel that if it was economically feasible, they would have kept it. But that's all water under the bridge now and I look forward to the next five years of expansion and improvements at Carowinds.

^ Thanks for that. You basically said what I said a few pages back. Stop second-guessing and wait and see what they have planned. It is going to be good, but sacrifices are going to have to be made for this to keep moving in an upward direction.

Everyone gets bent out of shape on guesses and possibilities. It's sad to see TR go, but honestly, it would be much sadder to see the park stagnate, and have nothing happen.

Then why did it take so long to open the new slides last season? That pales in comparison to this waterpark expansion.

The reason it took so long is because during that same off season, the park had two coasters to repaint, an Outer Hanks to enclose, a Skycoaster to relocate, a Hurler to retrack, a Harmony Hall to build, and soooooo much more.

I also seem to recall that they started on the slides very late, like late winter 2014.

While I was snooping around near the campground entrance grabbing a few shots of TR, I noticed quiet a few survey markers. They were on the other side of the road from the park except for the last one.
