General Carowinds discussion

All parks make additions and changes to some extent, but I stand by my opinion that Magic Kingdom and the Busch Parks still have most of their original feel intact, while Carowinds has destroyed everything about the original feel except the Goldrusher, the arbor tunnel into Carolina Midway and the area around the covered bridge. Parks can grow/change and keep their original feel, but Carowinds has completely failed at this. Paramount was only concerned with promotion bad movies at their parks, and Cedar Fair's flagship park is one of the most generic parks, saved by the fact that it is surrounded by a lake.

Magic Kingdom still has all of its original themed sections. They have changed attractions over the years, but the only major attractions to disappear have been the subs and the skyway. Mr Toad was replaced by a very poor attraction. All of the major feel of the original park is still there. This is the park in 1979. http://themeparkbrochures.net/maps/1979 ... 979_1.html Attractions have been replaced, but the only major change to the overall park is the removal of the subs. Replaced by New Fantasyland, which was built entirely in theme to the existing area.

Busch Gardens Williamsburg has its original themed sections other than Hastings being turned into Ireland which was actually an improvement. The full lake is still in the center of the park. The only major attractions removed have been Big Bad Wolf (it was replaced by something with a similar layout and great theming), the car ride and monorail which were losses of family attractions. In 40 years, little has been removed and the park still has its European theming. This is the 1983 map. It's still the same park with added attractions over the year http://themeparkbrochures.net/maps/1983 ... 83map.html

Busch Gardens Tampa has also kept its themed areas. They did reduce Congo for the ill-planned Jungala, removed the monorail and the park lacks flat rides. But the park still feels like it did years ago.

What at Carowinds is really Carolina themed now other than slapping Carolina on the front of ten names of areas and attractions lol?

I'm not sure Rolling Thunder was a true "Preservation" or just a cost thing because the part that's preserved is actually UNDER a portion of El Toro unless I missed something. It could be that they felt since it was underneath there, no reason to remove it unless they wanted a pass thru for vehicles or another ride. Of course, I could be wrong but that's my take. It's no where near like Alton Towers where they moved the corkscrew to the front entrance and commemorated it with fresh paint and plaques.

I made it out to the park for the first time since Thunder Road's removal, today.

It was already gonna be an emotional day for me. The whole reason I went to the park was to distract me from the fact that it's been one year since my dad died -who was gonna be my guest to the Fury announcement- and I needed to take my mind off of things.

Thunder Road was something we both enjoyed together, and I almost teared up looking at the empty lot of nothingness in it's place. But I sucked it up and thought about how I'm gonna be enjoying Carolina Harbor next season. That made things a little easier to swallow. I sincerely hope we get some flats or next year too though, that'd be some sweet icing on the cake.

When I was at the park yesterday, the station was completely gone and all that remained were footers, scraps of wood, and the chain.

Umm, Afterburn got the train out in less than a minute....
That isn't bad, I have seen the Afterburn crew do far worse this year. I don't know what there standards are now but when I worked at Hurler, that was impressive.

Looks like we were right folks. The embarrassing announcement came from Carowinds today. Thunder Road was removed for no good reason. I wont get into the whole reasons why we're disappointed. The reasons are many but to name a few.

  • Replacing a wave pool.. with a wave pool.
  • Adding more mediocre slides
  • No new air conditioned attractions
  • Adding a starbucks. . (Really?)

Now as we all know.Thunder Road didn't have to be removed for this mediocrity . The excuses were given but I don't buy them.

At the end of the day my whole family is missing Thunder Road and I hope yours is too.
