We finally made it to Scarowinds on Sunday night. We've gotten really busy lately, and haven't made it to the park in quite a while. We did Scarowinds last year but we just rode rides and didn't do any mazes.
The amazing: The first actor when you just walk into the beginning of Slaughterhouse. That dude had creepy down to an art form. Awesome.
The Good: All the props, smoke, music, and the scarezones made it fun to walk around the park. I enjoyed that aspect last year too.
The not-so-good: The mazes. We did three: Slaughterhouse, Silver Screen, and Zombie high. I found them pretty disappointing. The scares just weren't there. Some of the props were pretty well done though. They weren't really mazes either, which I found odd, they were just a winding walk-through with employees pointing the way much of the time. It was just the same thing over and over (actor hiding around corner), with no creepiness, frights, and really bad pacing. Some of the actors were not very good, some were terrible (except the super-star noted above). Espeically the zombie acting was bad. Worst zombie acting ever. We did the mazes first thing when we got there, and I'm glad we didn't have to wait in long lines for them. After three of them, we just started riding rides. And Holy cow was the line long for Fury. Only got one Fury ride. I haven't seen lines that long for Fury since opening weekend. It was a Sunday night, but it was Columbus day on Monday, so that might have made it busier than usual for a Sunday night.
We hope to make it back a couple more times this year. I might be inclined to just go on Sundays during the day to hopefully get some shorter lines for the coasters. But maybe we'll do one more Scarowinds on another Sunday night, just for the atmosphere of the park at night. I really do enjoy the atmosphere of Scarowinds a lot, it does make the park more fun even if the mazes were not as good as I hoped they would be. I think they should just make the entire park into a non-stop scare zone. Move all the actors out of mazes and have them interacting with the guests everywhere, all the time. That'd make waiting in lines more entertaining.
A little off topic: I figured we would take the year off from Carowinds next year, but my wife seems to now be hinting that she wants to get passes again.
