Carowinds blvd is being widened very soon. The county is well aware of the growing traffic problem and is ready to add another lane on either side of the road. I'm not so sure if and when the I77 entrance/exit will be expanded, possibly in 5 years or more. But carowinds boulevard will be expanded here pretty soon. I don't think it's a secret, so yeah.

On a related note, it will be interesting to see what becomes of Cabela's with continued rumors and talks of Bass Pro Shops buying them out. There is an estimated one-third location overlap of the two competitor's large stores within a reasonable driving location of each other across the nation (which I would think includes the Charlotte Metro area). If the purchase goes through down the road, it will be interesting to see if any of the stores are closed that fall into that location overlap.

Yeah, 77 is scheduled to be widened at some point over the next 20 years. Design work has not started so it might be awhile. I imagine interchange upgrades will happen at the same time.

Not to mention how many bridges and overpasses there are through Charlotte. That will cost several hundred million at least.

^ I've been saying the same thing. Plus the south side of 77 from uptown to the SC border everything is built up on to it. There's absolutely no room to widen 77. What I've read on NCDOT site is that they're planning the same design with the toll lanes as the north side of 77. There adding 3 new lanes increasing to 6 lanes in both directions. 4 general free lanes and two express toll lanes. I don't see this happening, without them bulldozing all the hotels some neighborhoods and other businesses along the sides of 77 which I know is going to be a major issues with owners and if they succeed that overhaul is going to be hell on with for commuters. It will take at least 6+ years to complete and this includes redesigning all interchanges especially what they call a problem child interchange of 77 and 277 by the stadium. I can only imagine the headache it will be. Cincinnati has been doing the overhaul of 75 for at least 7 years now. It's always a pain to go thru there.

the problem with 77 isnt the # of lanes, its all the freaking on and off ramps. thats whats slowing traffic. they just need to close some of them off and traffic would flow better.

Widening 77 from uptown to SC is projected to be the most expensive road project ever done in NC. Yes more expensive than the entire 485 loop. They will replace all those bridges, and will buy up property and redo the interchanges. Since we are at the planning stage, this will be the time for Carowinds to lobby for dedicated ramps in and out of the parking lot. You're not going to get them after 77 has been redesigned or completed.
