If I remember correctly, Steve said something on the lines of this: The bottom half of the tubes are not translucent and are painted. The tops that go on them are translucent, but to a certain degree. This will allow for some sunlight to enter the tube, but not so much that it's blinding, and not too little that it's dark inside.

In the picture below, the slides on the left are translucent, and the ones in the background are not.

Yea I did coasterbrotha but I didn't ride it I just glanced at it quickly. So I really didn't take in any detail. I only go to soak city for tornado, baja bends and zoom flume.

What is a gel coat?

Gel coat is a polyester coating. I am employed by the largest american manufacturer of gel coat. The reason it is used for water slides is for it's ability to be highly flexible. Also, it is engineered to bond well to fiberglass.
