General Carowinds discussion

I have an original theme for the hotel:

The exterior would be brick and have large columns all across the front. To give it more of that southern charm, they could put old horse drawn carriage buggies out front (maybe they could find some old MGM movie studio props?). The ballroom could look really "southern" with old-fashioned curtains, antique furniture and even a huge custom made rug featuring symbols of both carolinas (dogwood leaves, cardinals, cotton blossoms). As for the name, how about calling it, "The Plantation House."

Negative. The blacks would be very offended and rightfully so. Besides, it's nothing original about that. They had one and got rid of it, and didn't being it back on purpose.

I'm white and Id be offended by calling it the Plantation house. There's a reason Monster mansion is no longer Monster Plantation.

I'm sure CF wasn't too upset about getting rid of the plantation house they already had.

Of course they wouldn't ...

I thought by using the word "original" you would get the sarcasm and see it as a joke.

For those of you who don't know the history...
The original entrance was a plantation house. The second floor was a ballroom type room that was used as a VIP area at one time (later closed off because it could only be accessed by stairs and was not handicapped accessible). It was furnished with movie prop furniture and reproductions to resemble a fancy southern plantation house ballroom. It was ornate. (Carowinds acquired many movie props in the famous MGM studios auction.) Carriage buggies used to be in front of the plantation house and guest were able to climb in them for pictures.

I agree it will be difficult to have southern "charm" without having negative connotations that would be reminiscent of racial divisions. Especially the plantation house design... as much as I actually like the design itself.

Maybe something Charleston-esque. I'd hate for it to be a cookie-cutter hotel style. It needs to be something that says "Carolinas" in the design.

So people were offended by the Plantation House....
Are they offended by Latta Plantation too?
Carowinds was formerly a Plantation before becoming Carowinds....
Haunted Mansion at Disneyland is modeled after a Southern Plantation as is Monster Mansion, Carowinds refered to the Plantation House as a mansion sometimes also. Y'all going to be so offended that Disney changes the Mansion facade to match Florida?

Not surprising that you don't get why people would be offended. Go back to your southern white way of life.

I as well would be offended if they were to erect something like this. It would be very uncomfortable for me and my husband....who is African American. He never visited before 2015. Sure it's history, and it should be remembered. But now that it's been removed, no need to return something reminiscent of it at an amusement park. Leave that to museums and historic sites where it belongs.
