General Carowinds discussion

Hi Dani,
I'm new to the site. Like the idea of the museum and may have a few things of interest from the 1973 Opening Year. These are rare so security would be a consideration.

Items: Pre-opening conceptual map
Pre-construction photos of park site staked out by ride/attraction (some include
Pat Hall)
Opening day vip medallion gift in box
1973 VIP Season Gold Pass
1973 Employee Manual
1973 Employee Name tags
Pre-opening original press kit items
1973 Carowinds club items

Please keep me up to date when you can. Thanks Doug

Dani, you might find some interesting things right there in the park. For one thing, it might be interesting for some of the enthusiasts to see some of the blue prints from the parks construction. Caro's collection of originals is in fairly good shape. Additionally, if it hasn't been cleaned out, there is a storage area above the carpentry shop that seemed to serve as a boneyard for furniture, but also collected some theming items. If that hasn't been cleaned out, that might have some treasures.

I also remeber that Scooby's Haunted Mnasion has some very nice things in the attic of that ride from the old days of Carowinds & Harmony Hall.

kruss9610 is right about the storage area above the carpentry shop.
I saw tons of amazing things up there and when they decided to throw alot of that stuff out in 2006 i was lucky enough to get 2-3 things from there. It might be cleaned out by now if they we're cleaning house in 2006. The end of 2006 would have been a great year for dumpster diveing at Carowinds.

The storage area above the Carowinds Theatre holds some very nice items from days gone by. I'd love to get a hold of some of the stuff in the Theatre. Last time i was up there i noticed a model of Volcano just sitting around collecting dust. Now why a Volcano model would be at Carowinds is beyond me but it was cool.

It was in the lobby at corporate for a while. So the D&E guys probably called KD, asked if they wanted it back, and dumped it a Caro, when KD said to keep it.

Kinda related to the subject at hand, some 8mm footage of Carowinds from '73 or '74 showed up on Youtube the other day:

Riding on the Sternwheeler you see the Speedway cars, some horses (on the island?) the Skyway, the Indian Canoes, a bit of the Double Decker Carousel, and then later on the parking lot trams. Pretty interesting! 8)

Thank you for the link Duke! Priceless, priceless video there!!!

I had almost forgotten about the live animals on the island. I could have watched another hour of this!! I am still working on getting some opening day movies from a co-worker who says his parents took lot's of movies there in the 70's. When/if I ever get those (and believe me, I am working hard on it) I will post them on You Tube.

Hey Ken, is there any chance of Carowinds:The Early Years coming back?

Found this discussion about creating a museum from awhile ago. I guess nothing ever came of it? I think it would be great - some of you have really nice items, and I'd love to see original blueprints, concept art, old signs or whatever. Any idea what the park still has?

We were trying to locate blueprints of Thunder Road last week, but all we found were blueprints of how the controls work. Nothing about the structure of the ride. But there's still a lot of stuff back there that would go great in a museum. It's not in the park's plans yet, but they'd like to have some sort of museum at some point.

I hope ya'll weren't looking for blue paper. I wouldn't think they would lose something that important. I use to own a copy of one of the Rocket(Phoneix) blueprints.

PTC may have a copy of them.

Was Thunder Road built with skid brakes and manual controls?
