General Carowinds discussion

"We also learn from the Charlotte City Council agenda that Cedar Fair is planning a new roller coaster as a part of the expansion. "

Record breaking huh? I dont see that anywhere...

Just because they say that Carowinds will get a new roller coaster doesn't mean it will be "record breaking" and i wont believe it until I see it written/announced. A new roller coaster could mean a family style or anything at all... We cant jump to the conclusion that it will break records.... hopefully it will.... but I think its way to soon to even think that...

Well, I wouldn't call it jumping to a conclusion, I'd barely call it tip-toeing to a conclusion.
:)

A Few Facts:
• We will be getting some sort of record-breaking attraction.
• We will be getting a Roller Coaster as part of the expansion.
• We are getting two non-record breaking Water Slides.
• Zimmerman says He "Can not wait to ride what's being added to Carowinds".
• Majority of the expansion will be non-rideable. (Parking, etc).

I think its safe to assume that since we are getting both a Roller Coaster, and some sort of "Record Breaking Attraction", that the coaster may in fact be the record breaking attraction. I don't think its too far of a stretch. :D

But I totally get not wanting to get your hopes up, just to be disappointed.

For the coaster, I'm hoping it's some kind of record-breaking wood coaster, a la El Toro @ Six Flags Great Adventure. That is by far the best one I've ever ridden, with Thunderhead a close second. We need one of those crazy, non-stop wooden beasts! :D

If not a wood coaster, we need some sort of launch coaster, preferably a full-circuit one.

Personally, I hope its a B&M Giga or a "Carolina Dragster", the southern version of CP's Top Thrill Dragster.
I could definitely see the tallest, fastest, longest Wooden Roller Coaster in the world hitting Carowinds. We need something to draw in those 600,000 new customers they believe it will attract.

Record Breaking rides does not equate to tallest and fastest. I'm not saying that Carowinds won't get a tall or fast ride, but Intimidator was a record breaking ride as it's the tallest/longest in the Southeast. Don't Get Your Hopes up that we're getting something bigger than what will likely come.

You get to a point of diminished returns if your 'record breaker' comes with an asterisk. Assuming they are serious about increasing attendance by that large amount, I would not expect them to do that. Cedar Point never did that with their coasters. In recent years, they never did that with Wonderland. Banshee is not the tallest, but it is the longest. Intimidator came with an 'southeast' asterisk. Historically Carowinds always came was the "In the Carolinas" notation. A Giga that is 5 feet taller, or even match MF would finally put the Winds into a league of it's own. MF is 13 years old, it is about time to relinquish that crown. I can't get into the Dragster debate, because after all these years, it's still debatable if it is in fact a coaster.
*It would nice to know how much Wonderland's Giga increased attendance compared to their hyper. The coasters are so similar, you have to wonder if it made enough of a difference to justify the expense.

First, I have a feeling that they're focusing on park improvements, atmosphere improvements (See what they're doing at Kings Dominion), better food offerings, etc. to play in to that increase in attendance. You get to the point of diminished returns if you spend a butt load of money for a record breaking coaster that was 500' high and didn't bring in enough people to cover that. Just as with Intimidator, which has done very well for Carowinds from what I understand, you don't have to have the biggest ride to bring in people. Enthusiasts care more about records than the GP. It could be the tallest coaster in the state and people will flock to it if its interesting and marketed right. Do you really think less people would go to Kings Island next year if Banshee didn't hold a record?

Not only that, but record breaking could be many things. Stop focusing on height or speed. It could be most inversions. It could be tallest water slide. It could be a huge new flat ride.

As for Leviathan, that was moved, err...built in Canada because the new guy knows they need to keep attendance up up there.

One new ride record breaking or not might give you a bump. But you have to keep people coming back.

And I almost guarantee you that most of the money Carowinds spends out of that amount announced will be built on infrastructure and improvement at the parks.

Much like everyone arguing that Kings Island was getting a Giga because bla bla bla, I'm just trying to make sure you all don't get your hopes up again (and again). Mr. Oimet is not Dick Kinzel. Stop looking for patterns where there no longer is any. Look at the new patterns being made now.
