General Carowinds discussion

I still have hope that this may be the case but I'm beginning to think RideWarrior may be correct that they won't be back till next year. Only time (or a select few who know ;)) will tell.

It still surprises me that Carowinds has decided to extend regular park operation through November 11th. I just don’t see why they would do that when they have to haul everything out of the park from SCarowinds and haul everything in for Winterfest. I’m happy that it’s open later I just wasn’t expecting it to be. Oh yeah did I mention Winterfest now opens at 2pm on Saturdays and they are open until 1am on New Year’s Eve this year.

One of the employees at the park mentioned a couple months ago because of the unexpected weather conditions early in the season they may add some more days onto the season.

Maybe the tallest and fastest launch coaster in the southeast!?
That would be great! Just dreaming but how about the tallest and fastest launch coaster in the US or maybe even the world. HA! It’s nice to dream.

That dream may not be such a stretch if you look at Cedar Fair's past as it relates to installing signature coasters at their big parks. Next year's dive coaster will be a record breaker. Steel Vengeance is a record breaker for this year. Look at most of the big coasters that preceded them.

My feeling is that Cedar Fair will go all out on this one because, frankly, that is what they are known for. I expect it to have the fastest launch, and the tallest first drop of any of the other Mack two launchers. I saw an interview where Rob Decker stated they purposely raised the height of Steel Vengeance to over 200 ft. just so they could have that record. It was an ego thing just to show Six Flags how a hybrid should be done. :D Sorry kids, but that is simply the way our parent company rolls.

Cedar Fair is not going to spend nearly $30 million on this ride just so it can play second fiddle to another ride of the same type somewhere else on the planet. That information is on a solid footing, or a solid footer.

Then there is the little tidbit from the last quarterly report where Zimmerman elevated Carowinds to the Cedar Point level of priority. When you are at that level, you don't get 'seconds'. It does not hurt that Zimmerman lives on Lake Norman either.
Consider this, the untrained eye would think Canada's Wonderland is getting the big expensive priority project for next season. I mean it's a B&M and likely a record breaker right? The caveat here is that Valravn is only estimated to have cost between $18-$20 mil. The recently opened Icon cost $28 mil. As Fury was a few years back, this will be the anticipated project for the new season.

This is just something to think about as we wait for the announcement.

So many great points and I agree with you also wasn’t it reported a while back Cedar Fair wanted to make Carowinds the cedar point of the south. We could be looking at some sort of record breaking with this new coaster. Excited is a understatement for what we may be in for.

"World's First Double Looping Launch Coaster"

But I can't see it breaking any real regional or world records if the NL2 predictions are accurate.

Lightning Rod is taller and faster, Cheetah Hunt and Hulk are longer, this coaster doesn't have a true "drop" so steeper is out the door...

No this will not be the tallest, fastest launch in the US. It will not be 128mph and over 456ft like Kinda Ka. Mack has not built stratas and multi launch makes these inconceivable. The Mack launches are top end 62mph or so. They could push that up to 80pmh or so with LSM and still retain reliability.

The notion Wonderland's coaster is a record is still pure speculation mainly coming from one fanboy on Youtube that goes to the park everyday. Amusement Insider has a high level of blatant factually wrong information in his many videos. The claim it's a record breaker is based on assumption of the same lift hill angle as Valryvn. Vals hill is steep b/c it's in a tight space. B&M has other dive coasters with different lift hill angles.

ICON at Blackpool by all reports was just over 16M British pounds which is about 22M USD.

Rob Decker in his interview told RMC to break every record the can. RMC gave them a couple of prelim designs and CP said go all out. Schalke was interviewed and as he put it . "he was told to go nuts" and push all the boundaries . As someone who rode Steel Vengeance 20 times in one day it'sa masterpiece. Jason McClure is constantly hanging around Frontier town beaming like a proud papa over his baby.

Carowinds on the same priority as Cedar Point? NOPE! Carowinds, CGA , Wonderland will be prioritized over other parks b/c of their recent growth and growth cited growth potential. I read every quarterly, annual report, conference call and the 3 investor presentations in the last month. Cedar Point will and always be the #1priority(nobody is on it's level), it produces 130M EBIDTA, the only other park close is Knotts at about 115M,. #3 and #4 are low to mid 60M and those are KI and Wonderland. Wonderland is going to pass Ki and Carowinds will likely catch KI within 5 years. Ki is a "mature market" and harder to grow. CF wants Carowinds to be the "Thrill Capital of the Southeast". They see Carowinds and Ca Great America as having low penetration in what they label as qualified visitors. Essentially they evaluate the income level, age, family %, single young people %, etc,,of the people in the area. These stats are why CF sees possible huge growth potential in CGA and Carowinds. They also are setting a goal of 3M attendance for Carowinds.

My, my, aren't we the Debbie Downer. :D

*No one is even comparing this to a Strata coaster. In terms of a Mack launch, it won't take much to be the tallest and fastest in that class.

*Again with the dive coaster, you will only have to be 1 foot taller to hold the record. Remember how they did the hypers. Each one was a few feet taller than the previous.

*On the cost of Icon, I can only go by what a park official said in an interview. I have no way or desire to dispute what he says. It is my understanding that Mack two launch coasters are expensive.

*Based on what you said about Cedar Point, Carowinds should have never gotten Fury, Intimidator, or the resort hotel this year. Carowinds is receiving attention because of future growth potential. Investors are forward planners with an eye towards future profits. There is even concern that the type of grow investors covet is not there for Cedar Point unless it expands it reach. Has Cedar Point even increased it's attendance in recent years? That last I saw, CP and KI had about the same attendance numbers.

hasn’t cedar fair moved some of their offices to Charlotte I think that says a little something what they feel about this area giving this area is one of the fastest growing in the country I believe we can expect some nice surprises Ahead for our wonderful park.

They probably aren't going to market it as a Mack coaster. Sure, Fury was marketed with the obscure "Tallest and Fastest Giga Coaster" phrase, but 'giga' at least lends itself to conveying the scale of the ride. To the vast majority of visitors, 'Mack' would not create any sort of emotion or idea.
#100768
Carowinds got the giga because CP already has a giga and strata. That comment makes no sense. gobbles is spot on in every fact he laid out, direct from the company, mind you.
