That is a flash back in time for me. I worked in custom AV over 12 years ago and while I specialized in programming and automation, I did have to know a little about video.
If I recall correctly, for well-lit environments you will want a projector with as many lumens as possible - usually 5,000 or more for outdoor applications. If you couple that with a high gain screen (1.3 or more) , you will increase the brightness of the image reflection allowing a larger display and wider viewing angle.
Then there are the basics, like not having the sun shine directly on the screen.

I'm not confident that I'm 100% correct since it's been so long. Like MarkD said, though, it is quite possible to successfully have movies outside during the day time.
